The Axis and Global Fascism. Workshop for The Oxford Handbook of the Axis Powers

This is the second workshop preparing The Oxford Handbook of the Axis Powers (eds. António Costa Pinto, Constantin Iordachi and Daniel Hedinger). The first, held in Vienna in April 2026, examined the dictatorships that took shape under Axis rule. This one puts the three main powers themselves at the centre and asks what follows from treating the Axis as a connected object of study rather than as three parallel stories.

The Axis and Global Fascism. Workshop for The Oxford Handbook of the Axis Powers

At the height of their power in mid-1942, the Axis of Berlin, Rome and Tokyo ruled over much of Europe, North Africa and the Asia-Pacific. The alliance was far more than a military coalition. It grew out of intensifying interaction between the three countries from the 1930s onwards and stood for an ideologically grounded alternative to both the liberal-capitalist and the communist model. Long dismissed as an alliance in name only, it is now being reassessed, not least because fascism is no longer read as a European product but as a global phenomenon of the interwar years.
