Description:
The project aims to shed light on the non-nationalist alternatives to the dissolution of the Second Yugoslavia, so far understudied in the literature. Specifically, it examines the transformative political potential of Ante Marković, the federal Prime Minister between 1989 and 1991, and its movement, the Alliance of Reformist Forces (SRSJ). The SRSJ sought to reanimate the attachment to Yugoslavia conceived as a supranational country and pursued a third-way, market socialist model, which had apparently some correspondences with other transition paths in Central-Eastern Europe. As a paradoxical combination of governance and dissidence, the SRSJ provides a peculiar viewpoint of the “other 1989” in Yugoslavia.
