Call for Papers: Tourism and Islands of Memory (2-3 June 2025, Stari Grad, Hvar, Croatia)

The conference and workshop “Tourism and Islands of Memory” is part of an ongoing workshop series and initiative on the historical remembrance of islands, focused on the Adriatic and Mediterranean from a comparative perspective. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of tourism in Stari Grad, this year’s workshop is devoted to tourism. 

The workshop invites academics and practitioners from multidisciplinary backgrounds to reflect on tourism and historical remembrance in the context of islands. Questions of interest pertaining to the history of tourism and its impact on local communities, how tourism can harness and promote historical memory, sustainable tourism, and heritage, as well as the impact of over-tourism.

The conference and workshop have an exploratory character, and we invite researchers’ work on and from islands in the Adriatic, Mediterranean, and beyond to reflect on these cases. We are also welcoming suggestions/brainstorming about potential projects.

The event will feature academic panels, practitioner workshops and a public event. It builds on previous events on the theme and seeks to establish a continuous debate on the topic.

Please submit a 400-word abstract and a CV by 15 March 2025 to florian.bieber@uni-graz.at . Accepted participants will be notified by 1 April 2025. 

The organizers will provide accommodation (up to 2 nights from 1-3 June) and meals. Participants are expected to cover their travel costs. 

The workshop is hosted by the Mediterranean Studies Department of the Pharos International Institute for Sciences, Art, and Culture, located in Stari Grad, Hvar.

The workshop is jointly organized by the Pharos International Institute for Sciences, Art, and Culture and the Centre for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz in cooperation with the University of Rijeka and the Stari Grad Museum.
