Call for Papers: Islands of Memory

2-4 May 2024, Stari Grad, Hvar, Croatia


The workshop “Islands of Memory” is part of an ongoing initiative on historical remembrance on islands, focused on the Adriatic and Mediterranean from a comparative perspective. The workshop invites academics and practitioners from a multidisciplinary background to reflect on memory and historical remembrance in the context of islands. Questions of interest pertain to questions of isolation and insularity, issues of identity vis-à-vis states and nations, connections, and transnational networks along historical sea routes.

The workshop has an exploratory character, and we invite researchers work on and from islands in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and beyond to reflect on these cases. We are also welcoming suggestions/brainstorming about potential projects.

The workshop will feature academic panels, practitioner workshops and a public event.

The workshop builds on previous events on the theme and seeks to establish a continues debate on the topic.

Please submit a 400-word abstract and a CV by 20 March 2024 to florian.bieber(at)uni-graz.at. Accepted participants will be notified by 1 April 2024.

Accommodation (for up to 3 nights) and workshop dinner will be provided by the organizers. Travel costs are expected to be covered by participants.

The workshop in hosted by the Mediterranean Studies Department of the recently established Pharos International Institute for Sciences, Art, and Culture, located in Stari Grad, Hvar.

The workshop is jointly organized by the Pharos International Institute for Sciences, Art, and Culture and the Centre for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz in cooperation with the University of Rijeka and the Marco Polo Interpretation Center, Korčula.
