Description:
A decade long social and political crisis that is shaking the foundations of neoliberal global order, opened up space for intellectual engagement with its ideological and historical tenets. Recent repositioning of historical consciousness with regards to socialist Yugoslavia, draws new attention to its inner workings, questions politically motivated negatory narratives and inspires new creative research. This new research, of course, needs to be based on solid ground of archival sources. As this lecture demonstrates, history of Yugoslavia, as well as its brakeup and demise, is at the same time a history of its archives, its records and memory traces — how they came to be, how they moved through space-time, how they were stored away, but also, how they whittered away. In an attempt to excavate the history of Yugoslav socialism, we also need to excavate the records, and in doing so, to understand their own context of creation, their history, societal position, institutional and legal frameworks, as well as their research potentials, both real and imaginary.
