Historians and Populism: Regional Perspectives and Entanglements
ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
ZRC Atrium, March 26, 2022: 10 AM – 1 PM
In light of the recent solidifying of what could be named as populist international, we are opening a conversation on one of the first areas and people that were targeted: history and historians. Populist regimes and their supporters feed themselves on historical myths, distortions and subversion of the public debate on historical themes. The responsibility is both on those who participate in the making of populist abuses of history as professional researchers, as well as on those who engage with public history as social commentators and public figures.
A similar pattern of injecting the historical narratives with populist and ultranationalist values can be observed across East Central Europe and beyond, whereby the ‘places’ of history, namely the academia, museums, publishing sector and urban spaces, become a battleground for interpretations, oftentimes conquered by the ideologues of those in power. The roundtable participants will discuss the mechanisms and the dynamics of this process in the regional perspective and with a special focus on various entanglements between these cases.
PART 1: WALKING ON EGGSHELLS: HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE POPULIST CONTEXTS (10:00-11:15)
PART 2: PUNDITS, MEGAPHONES AND MARCHES: STRUGGLES OVER PUBLIC HISTORY (11:45-13:00)
