Marek Cichocki and Ivan Krastev debate. European Memory and Politics: A Crisis of What?
The debate will be held as a part of the ‘Genealogies of Memory’ project, which this year takes place within the Memory Studies Association (MSA) annual conference.
The session will present two quite different points of views on the recent and present memory politics and memory policies in Europe.
Ivan Krastev and Marek Cichocki, from either liberal, or conservative positions, will discuss the political aspects of memories, bringing in both, the EU/European context, as well as the regional Central-East European perspective. They will discuss the challenges to transnational commemorations, the problem of nationalization of memories, the crises of democracy, and the current developments caused by the pandemic.
All of this will allow the audience to get acquainted with some of the important discursive contexts of the conference original locus, i.e., East-Central Europe / Warsaw.
The session will be a duet of voices, with moderation by Małgorzata Pakier.
