Organised in collaboration with the Centre for Intellectual History, University of Saint Andrews

 

 

The field of intellectual history is today a dynamic and changing field. New subjects are being studied, in dialogue with spatial approaches, with the history of emotions, with the study of cultural transfers and translation studies and with many areas of cultural history, and the field is going ‘global’. Recent volumes have reflected these changes, in particular Rethinking Modern European Intellectual History, edited by Darrin McMahon and Samuel Moyn, (Oxford U. P., 2014) or Global Intellectual History, edited by Samuel Moyn and Andrew Sartori (Columbia U.P., 2015) ; and a new addition to the existing journals on Intellectual History, Global Intellectual History, is being launched. by the Saint Andrews Centre for Intellectual History.

 

This conference will bring together some of the practitioners of this new intellectual history working on a variety of subjects, periods and geographical spaces, to present and discuss their research and to consider the methodological issues that emerge from it. The conference will concentrate on the presentation of original research rather than methodological papers, but it is hoped that it will throw light on what is meant by intellectual history today and by ‘global intellectual history’ and on how the latter relates to existing practice.
