GOVERNING INTER-IMPERIAL AREAS BETWEEN THE ADRIATIC AND THE BLACK SEAS

International conference 29-30 September 2016

As a consequence of the shifting powerrelations in the so-called Age of Revolutionand Reform, the political landscape of Eastern Europe was changed dramatically. With the expansion of the French, theAustrian and the Russian Empires at theexpense of others (such as Venice andPoland), large imperial border areas werecreated anew or, alternatively, had to bereorganised according to their changingstrategic status, while others were on theverge of independence (e. g. Ottomanprovinces).

By comparing quite different, yet contiguoustransitional areas stretching from the Adriaticto the Black Seas, the conference sets out toinquire into the ways in which governmentwas intellectually and practically performedin situ, including forms of resistance as wellas the repercussions at “the centre” ofimperial self-understanding.
