Agustín Cosovschi – Making the Third World. Towards a Cultural History of Non Alignment

The presentation will discuss the general lines of a research project on cultural relations and transfers between Yugoslavia and Third World countries during the Cold War. With the aim of questioning binary notions of Cold War history and bringing out the complexities of cultural life during the period, we take Yugoslavia as a vantage to observe the construction of the Non Aligned Movement as a global project that was not only based on political and economic cooperation, but also on transnational cultural and intellectual connections. For that, the research draws largely from Yugoslav archival and intellectual sources, but also includes Latin American, African and Asian intellectual and diplomatic sources, as well as materials from the press in Spanish, French, English and Serbo-Croatian. In the presentation, we will draw from a number of examples concerning Yugoslav relations with Latin America.

He is an Associate Researcher at the Centre d’Etudes Turques, Ottomanes, Balkaniques et Centrasiatiques in Paris. His research deals primarily with Yugoslav cultural and intellectual history. He has published articles in scientific journals such as Revue des études slaves and Revue d’histoire en sciences humaines (France), Südosteuropa (Germany), Slovanský přehled (Czech Republic) and Papeles de Trabajo (Argentina).
