Culture wars: what can we learn from the US? (30 November 2021, 17:00 to 18:15)

Debate about the supposed emergence of “culture wars” in the UK has exploded in recent years, accompanied by concerns that the country may be headed in a similar direction to the US, hugely polarised and divided.

Indeed, heated disagreements over issues ranging from Brexit and political correctness to free speech, the British empire and more, seem to suggest it’s getting harder than ever to see past cultural divides. But what’s the reality? Are we heading down the same path as the US, or are these concerns overblown?

Join our panel to discuss what we can learn from America’s experience of cultural conflict and polarisation – and whether it can help the UK chart a different course.

Panel

  • Rafael Behr, columnist, the Guardian
  • Professor Bobby Duffy, Director of the Policy Institute at King’s College London
  • Professor Morris Fiorina, Wendt Family Professor of Political Science, Stanford University
  • Professor Lilliana Mason, Professor of Government and Politics, Johns Hopkins University

This event is part of the ESRC’s Festival of Social Science.
