BB: Daniel Baric – Translating Njegoš in a Global Perspective: Montenegro, the Mahabharata, and the Graz Nexus
Johann Kirste (1851-1920) was the first translator into German (1886) of what is considered a canonical piece of Montenegrin literature and identity, The Mountain Wreath [Gorski Vijenac, 1849]. A professor of oriental languages at the University in Graz, he delivered a translation according to his research, replacing the text not only in Southeast-European history, but also in a much wider perspective, merging classical, modern and oriental philology. One of the questions raised by his translation is how his close reading as a scholar of Sanskrit was orientalizing Njegoš.
Daniel Baric studied in Paris, Berlin and Budapest German, Slavic and Hungarian studies. Since 2018 he has been Associate professor in South-Slavic studies at Sorbonne Université. His research deals with the intercultural history of East-Central and South-Eastern Europe.
