Call for Papers: The Role of Historical Figures in History and Collective Memory

CALL FOR PAPERS

The International Conference “The Role of Historical Figures in History and Collective Memory” will take place from 6-8 November 2023 in Skopje, organized by the Institute of National History. The aim of this conference is to gather researchers from various fields to introduce a discussion on the questions related to all the aspects of the role of historical figures in the history and collective memory through the historical époques, from ancient to modern times.

The conference is being held on the occasion of the 145th anniversary of the birth of Dimitrija Čupovski (1878–1940) – the president of the Macedonian Scientific and Literary Fellowship (1902–1917), as the foundation of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as the 5th anniversary of the death of acad. Blaže Ristovski (1931–2018) – his researcher and affirmer of the idea of the beginnings of the Macedonian academic culture.

With this conference, we would like to invite scholars from different disciplines in the humanities to contribute to the research of issues related to (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Role of figures in the historical processes
  • Historical figures in the collective memory
  • Scientists in the process of transfer and exchange of knowledge
  • Emigrants and academic cultures
  • Enlighteners – activity and commemoration
  • Historical figures and the process of institution building
  • Participants in cultural and national mobilisation
  • Protagonists for linguistic emancipation
  • Role of traders in the exchange of knowledge and ideas
  • Translators and transfer of knowledge
  • Intellectual elites in exile
  • Historical figures and identity
  • Women in education and science
  • Spiritual leaders and followers in history and memory
  • Women migrants – biographies and memoires
  • Memory places of historical figures
  • Biographers and autobiographers
  • Creators of literary and artistic production
  • Intelligentsia and war – interaction and memory
  • Role of photographers and cinematographers
  • Ambassadors, missionaries and travellers

There is no fee for the conference, but the organizers do not have the possibility to cover the participants’ expenses for travel and accommodation. English and Macedonian will serve as the main conference languages. The work of the Conference will take place in a hybrid form (with presence and through an online connection). In the activities outside the work part, a ceremonial laying of flowers will be organized at the City Cemetery in Skopje.

Please send 350-word abstracts along with a short academic CV to Prof. Dr. Biljana Ristovska-Josifovska (brjosifovska@yahoo.com) no later than 30 June 2023. The organizers aim to let you know whether your proposal has been accepted up to 15 July.

A selection of the presented papers will be published in a special volume.
