International Conference “Non-German Camps during the Holocaust Period”

One of the major symbols of the Nazi era and its genocidal policy against the Jewish people is the camp of Auschwitz. Yet during the years 1933-1945 Nazi Germany developed an enormous network of camps for various purposes and of different size and form throughout Europe – for detention, punition, forced labor, transition, extermination etc.  Yet, camps were also established and run by local authorities in occupied countries and by Nazi Germany’s allies and satellites, some established already before the war.

The 2021 biennial Yad Vashem International Scholars’s Conference will be dedicated to the topic of the non-German camps, in order to deepen our understanding of the local dynamics and factors that influenced the persecution of Jews both as a separate group and as part of a broader range of persecuted groups in camps in different countries.
