Taylor McConnell – Hrvatska or His-vatska? Gendering the post-war Croatian commemorative process

This seminar will explore the dynamics of gender and memory in the years following Croatian independence and the build-up to Croatia’s entry into the European Union in 2013. As is common in many post-war societies, masculine discourses of violence and defence have dominated much of Croatia’s memory landscape vis-à-vis the Homeland War (1991-1995). In contrast, the voices of women, among many other marginalised communities, have been pushed aside or silenced, their sacrifices left out of the monuments, museums and commemorative events that have emerged across the country since 1995. Comparative studies of gendered remembrances of war in other post-conflict societies will be provided in order to illuminate the idiosyncrasies of Croatia’s own cultural memory. This presentation builds from ongoing work on the (ab)use of memory as a political and cultural tool in modern Croatia and the ongoing struggle for influence between various social groups in determining the content of Croatia’s narrative of self.
