Currently a great deal of specialized knowledge is necessary to approach the field of Byzantine law. This Element works to break down the barriers to this fascinating subject by providing a brief, clear introduction to the topic. It makes a scholarly contribution by placing Byzantine law in a broader perspective and by reconsidering some of the aspects of the study of Byzantine law. The Element places Byzantine law outside of the box by comparing, for example, Byzantine law to the European legal tradition and highlighting the role that Byzantine law can have in unravelling the common legal past of Europe. It gives also information on the status of Byzantine legal studies and makes suggestions on how to study Byzantine law and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Daphne Penna <\/strong>studied law at the University of Athens in Greece where she completed her master\u2019s in \u2018History, Philosophy and Sociology of Law\u2019 (cum laude, 2003). In the year 2012 she defended and published her thesis on The Byzantine Imperial Acts to Venice, Pisa and Genoa, 10th-12th Centuries. A Comparative Legal Study, (PhD, University of Groningen, supervisors: B.H. Stolte and J.H.A. Lokin, published by Eleven International Publishing, The Hague 2012, 344pp.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research interests lie in Roman and Byzantine law and especially in their influence on the European legal tradition; she has published extensively on this area (Brill, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, De Gruyter, Palgrave Macmillan, Taylor &amp; Francis, Dossiers Byzantines, Fontes Minores, Forschungen zur byzantinischen Rechtsgeschichte, Byzantinische Zeitschrift, Revue des \u00c9tudes Byzantines, Subseciva Groningana etc..).
