The terminology of ‘Byzantium’ artificially severs the ‘medieval’ eastern Roman empire from its ‘classical’ roots allowing for the fundamentally Eurocentric schematization of history into ‘ancient,’ ‘medieval,’ and ‘Renaissance’ periods. ‘Byzantine’ is not a benign term of art but has served a variety of political and historiographical agendas including maintaining nationalist visions of ethnic continuity, creating precedents for communism, enabling politics of nostalgia for Orthodox dominion, and constructing visions of western European superiority and masculinity that justify colonialism. By exploring these intellectual legacies of ‘Byzantium,’ and the benefits of conceptualizing Roman history as an unsevered whole, this Element exhorts scholars to let go of the ‘Byzantine’ misnomer.

Table of content

1 Introduction: Names Matter
2 Work Done by “Byzantium”
3 Reasons for Change
Conclusions
Acknowledgments
Rethinking Byzantium
Footnotes
Bibliography

Objavljeno: 2025.
ISBN: 9781009595582
70 str.
Cambridge University Press

Cijela knjiga dostupna je na: https://www.cambridge.org/core/elements/sailing-away-from-byzantium-toward-east-roman-history/EA0865C18B1B8BE9C5F32D042F76A8C6

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[19,8,3

post-55107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-e-knjige","category-knjige","category-novosti
„Sailing Away from Byzantium: Toward East Roman History“ Leonore Neville donosi argumente za napuštanje bizantskoga nazivlja i daljni razvoj u smjeru istočnorimske povijesti.

https://i0.wp.com/historiografija.hr/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Sailing-Away-from-Byzantium-Toward-East-Roman-History.webp?fit=368%2C543&ssl=1
„Worlds of Byzantium: Religion, Culture, and Empire in the Medieval Near East“, ur.
