The workshop is organized by the Graduate School’s doctoral students Eva-Maria Walther and Andrey Vozyanov for the Study Group “Social Sorting”, which is led by Prof. Dr. Ger Duijzings and Prof. Dr. Rainer Liedtke. The workshop will be held in English.

Although sharing some related questions, theories, and sources, anthropology and history are still divided in regard of methodologies, scales, and the main points of interests. The speakers who work at the intersection of two fields will reflect on temporal borders and analytical tensions between the studied present and past, as well as opportunities and challenges of this kind of multidisciplinarity in an Eastern, Southeast- and general European setting.

The objective of achieving representativeness and completeness in history is often being balanced against depth of analysis and exactness of description in anthropology. The latter is primarily achieved by focusing on a small section of reality, a choice which is commonly made by anthropologists, but also a substantial number of historians. This approach is arguably a useful counterweight or complement to those studies that aim at the bigger picture.

In order to stimulate conversation about gains and chances and possible misunderstandings in the encounter of the two disciplines (which is a continuous thread in the Social Sorting study group meetings), this workshop should bring together scholars both with a more anthropological or historical background to present their current work on micro-historical topics in an East, Southeast and general European setting. The ensuing discussions will allow an exchange of thoughts on a wide range of questions with regard to specific themes and methods. The workshop will contribute to broaden and deepen the mutual familiarity between the two disciplines and provide inspiration for the application of the respective concepts and methods even for disciplines other than history and anthropology. Walther and Vozyanov also expect and welcome the interest and participation in the workshop from members of the Graduate School beyond their study group.

Time: Friday July 21, 2017, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Location: Regensburg, Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, Landshuter Str. 4, Room 017

Participation: with previous registration via e-mail to Eva-Maria Walther and Andrey Vozyanov.

Programme

10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Panel 1

Henk Driessen (Nijmegen):
Anthropology and history: narcissism of decreasing differences?

Ineta Lipša (Riga):
Queer subjectivity and Soviet “barbarians” from Stalin to Brezhnev in the Latvian SSR

Maria Pirogovskaya (St. Petersburg):
Toolkits of Anthropology of Religion in Studying Cultural History: How 19th-century medicine constructs disgust.

1 p.m. – 2.30 p.m.
Break

2.30 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Panel 2

Sarah Kleinmann (Dresden):
Cultural-anthropological perspectives on National Socialism

Carl Bethke (Tübingen):
From the rules and practices of “belonging” toward “performing Identifications”.
