Please note that the fellowship period for the Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, and Polish fellowships is now tenable a period of eight (8) months<\/u>, commencing 1 October 2026 through to 31 May 2027. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 1998, Central European doctoral students have travelled to Edmonton for year-long research stays as part of the various fellowship programs sponsored by the Institute. Participants can take advantage of the resources of one of Canada’s largest research libraries and benefit from the intellectual community of one of the country’s leading research universities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students currently enrolled in doctoral programs in any field in Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in universities in Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, or Poland and holding citizenship in those countries are invited to join the group of Wirth Fellows in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CROATIAN RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For advanced students in Croatia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Croatian Doctoral Research Fellowship is tenable in the 2026-2027 academic year at the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada for a period of eight (8) months, commencing<\/strong> 1 October 2026 through to 31 May 2027<\/strong>. The Fellowship is valued at CAN $ 27,600.00 and will be paid in equal monthly installments at the end of each month, beginning October 2026.

The successful candidate will hold this fellowship at the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies, and is expected to be actively engaged in Ph.D. thesis research. Successful candidates are also expected to participate in the Institute’s cultural, scholarly and academic activities and events, particularly the development of academic relationships with institutions in Croatia. A willingness to engage with the local Croatian community and serve as a liaison between that community and the Faculty of Arts is also a requirement.

Young scholars from any discipline in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Fine Arts are invited to apply. Candidates should be Croatian citizens enrolled in a Ph.D. programme at a Croatian university at all-but-dissertation level and have an excellent command of spoken and written English. A sound reading knowledge of German or other Central European language and a proven research record (ideally in the form of publications), would be an asset.

Finalists in the competition for this fellowship will be interviewed by the Director of the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies in May of 2026. Due to the large number of applicants, we regret that unsuccessful candidates may not receive a notification of their status.
