Seminar Series talk: Creating Identity out of War and Migration<\/em> by Ana Miji\u0107, Sla\u0111ana Adamovi\u0107 and Jelena Joki\u0107-Bornstein<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty years after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, \u201cIRI.S \u2013 Creating Identity out of War and Migration\u201d (FWF, 2025\u20132028) explores the long-term effects of early experiences of war and forced migration on the identity formation of individuals who fled as children or adolescents to Vienna and Chicago, the so-called \u201c1.5 generation\u201d. Prof. Ana Miji\u0107 and her team, Sla\u0111ana Adamovi\u0107 and Jelena Joki\u0107-Bornstein present the theoretical and methodological framework of the project and provide insights in the recently completed first fieldwork phase in Vienna and Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ana Miji\u0107<\/strong> holds the position of Tenure-Track Professor of Qualitative Social Research at the Department of Sociology, University of Vienna. Her research is theoretically grounded in the sociology of knowledge and centers on identity formation in times of crisis, particularly under conditions of war and (forced) migration. From 2022 to 2025, she was a Visiting Professor at the Nationalism Studies Department at Central European University (CEU). Miji\u0107 lead the FWF-funded Project “Postwar Diaspora(s)”<\/a> (2015\u20132021) and was Co-PI of “The Art of Arriving \u2013 Reframing Refugee Integration”<\/a> (2021\u20132023). Since March of 2025 she is working with her team on her new project “IRI.S \u2013 Creating Identity out of War and Migration”<\/a>.
Sla\u0111ana Adamovi\u0107<\/strong> is a PhD candidate at the Department of Sociology, University of Vienna, exploring the interplay of personal and post-memory in the biographical narratives of the \u201c1.5 generation\u201d.
Jelena Joki\u0107-Bornstein<\/strong> is a PhD candidate at the Department of Sociology, University of Vienna, focusing on artistic practices of former child refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina in Vienna and Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
