It focuses on the four countries that form the core of East-Central Europe – Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary – but broadens the perspective by including more general comparisons within the region as well as insightful case studies from other countries that share some important characteristics with the narrowly defined East-Central Europe, but that, at the same time are able to shed some light on certain specific features of each case. The divergent developments in East-Central Europe after 1989 are explained by investigating the prehistory of transformation in the East-Central European states and societies from various perspectives and for areas as diverse as politics, social affairs, law, economy, culture, and national identity.

About the Editors

Martin Schulze Wessel is Professor of Eastern and Southeastern European History at the University of Munich and Director of the Collegium Carolinum.

Dr. Darina Volf is a research associate at the Department of History at LMU Munich and at the Collegium Carolinum, Research Institute for the History of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in Munich.

Pages: 185

Publisher: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht

Published: 2025

https://www.vandenhoeck-ruprecht-verlage.com/themen-entdecken/geschichte/osteuropaeische-geschichte/59596/changing-times-persisting-legacies

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[8,3

post-48729","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-knjige","category-novosti
TWO POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN THE “PROLETGARD ERC STARTING GRANT PROJECT”, KASSÁK FOUNDATION, BUDAPEST (DEADLINE: 1ST MAY 2026)
This five-year ERC-funded project examines how avant-garde art contributed to the formation of a workers’ movement counterculture in East Central Europe after 1918.
