{"id":46012,"date":"2025-04-24T21:03:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T21:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/historiografija.hr\/?p=46012"},"modified":"2025-04-24T21:03:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T21:03:08","slug":"bb-daniel-baric-translating-njegos-in-a-global-perspective-montenegro-the-mahabharata-and-the-graz-nexus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/historiografija.hr\/?p=46012","title":{"rendered":"BB: Daniel Baric &#8211; Translating Njego\u0161 in a Global Perspective: Montenegro, the Mahabharata, and the Graz Nexus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Johann Kirste (1851-1920) was the first translator into German (1886) of what is considered a canonical piece of Montenegrin literature and identity,&nbsp;<em>The Mountain Wreath&nbsp;<\/em>[<em>Gorski Vijenac<\/em>, 1849]. A professor of oriental languages at the University in Graz, he delivered a translation according to his research, replacing the text not only in Southeast-European history, but also in a much wider perspective, merging classical, modern and oriental philology. One of the questions raised by his translation is how his close reading as a scholar of Sanskrit was orientalizing Njego\u0161.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel Baric studied in Paris, Berlin and Budapest German, Slavic and Hungarian studies. Since 2018 he has been Associate professor in South-Slavic studies at Sorbonne Universit\u00e9.
