Darden has examined how education fosters durable national loyalties, shedding light on over a century of regional patterns in voting, secession, and armed resistance in Eurasia, and beyond. His research reveals the long-term impact of educational systems on national cohesion and political behavior. Lindstam has explored the role of symbolic politics in shaping national identity and minority inclusion. Her work asks how changes in textbooks, street names, and public symbols affect minorities’ sense of belonging and whether a social group’s perceived centrality to the nation influences its voice in public discourse. Using innovative causal research designs—including surveys, lab experiments, and natural experiments—she provides critical insights into the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion. Paglayan’s work challenges conventional wisdom about the origins of education systems in the West, showing that they emerged not from democratic ideals or industrialization needs but from governments’ efforts to exert control over citizens. Her findings have profound implications for understanding the future of democracy, education systems, economic development, and foreign aid. Together, these scholars will explore how education shapes and is shaped by nationalism, with consequences for politics, identity, and governance.

Panelists:

Keith Darden (American U, USA)

Agustina Paglayan (UCSD, USA)

Emmy Lindstam (IE U, Europe)

Organized and moderated Harris Mylonas (George Washington U, US)

NATIONALISM AND EDUCATION

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3

post-43742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-novosti
Foreign Policy Forum, in partnership with the project “Politika, društvo i komunikacija u Jugoistočnoj Europi” (POD-RUKOM), invites you to a discussion on the book The Dilemma of Nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe by Professor Erika Harris (Bristol University Press, 2026). The event will feature Professor Erika Harris (University of…
https://i0.wp.com/historiografija.hr/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Harris.jpg?fit=800%2C538&ssl=1&resize=350%2C200
https://i0.wp.com/historiografija.hr/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Harris.jpg?fit=800%2C538&ssl=1&resize=350%2C200 1x, https://i0.wp.com/historiografija.hr/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Harris.jpg?fit=800%2C538&ssl=1&resize=525%2C300 1.5x, https://i0.wp.com/historiografija.hr/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Harris.jpg?fit=800%2C538&ssl=1&resize=700%2C400 2x
Edited by Marta Verginella Purdue University Press Series: Central European Studies 258 Pages Published 2023 Women, Nationalism, and Social Networks in the Habsburg Monarchy, 1848–1918 focuses on the lives of women in Southeastern Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, exploring the intersection of gender and nationalism.
