This book explains the interweaving of (Eastern) Roman, medieval Serbian and Bulgarian contexts as well as Ottoman and Western European national discourses or reinvented traditions. We can distinguish a secularization and nationalization of the religious contexts in the 19th century within historicism, followed by a nationalization of God and a sacralization of the nation until the end of WWII. Contrary to the national views, the origins of the modern content of these discourses lie only to a very limited extent in the Middle Ages or in the Early Modern period, as this study shows.

Contents:

https://brill.com/display/title/39029

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[8,3

post-41215","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-knjige","category-novosti
CfP: CHOSEN NATION(S): HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL INTERPRETATIONS OF EXCEPTIONALISM, BUDAPEST, 10TH–11TH JUNE 2026 (DEADLINE: 1ST MAY 2026)
The Ludovika University of Public Service (NKE) and the Jewish Theological Seminary – University of Jewish Studies (OR-ZSE) are pleased to announce a joint academic conference on “Chosen Nation(s): Historical and Cultural Interpretations of Exceptionalism”, to be held in Budapest, Hungary.
