The visual turn in Southeastern European history and anthropology is deeply intertwined with the emergence of Digital Humanities in the Balkan countries. The efforts in the digitalization of visual (and other) sources in many institutions in the region enhances the visibility and thus the interest in these sources, which again has a positive effect on the progress of digitalization. However, lack of financial sources and coordination especially outside the large cities often prevents sustainable action. The Visual Archive Southeastern Europe (VASE), first launched in 2012 by the Southeast European History and Anthropology, University of Graz and run jointly in cooperation with the Middle Eastern Studies, University of Basel since 2016, serves as an example of best practice. In our talk, we will present the complex, interdisciplinary methodology we have developed to expand and sustain this online platform over time, changing teams, varying projects and different visual forms, in cooperation with institutions and donors from all the Southeastern European countries. Moreover, we will address theoretical and methodological issues such as the advantages and disadvantages of single-frame analysis and serial-frame analysis. The central operation in the establishment of a visual database is the image description, which is based on the art history subfield of iconology. It is the image description and contextualization which differentiates professional from unprofessional databases.<\/p>\n
