How is her historical research reflected in her writing on current events? How does her work on the history of the Gulag, the Sovietization of eastern Europe, or the Holodomor inform her understanding of Russia&#8217;s criminal war on Ukraine? Applebaum will answer these questions and many more in a wide-ranging and open conversation and q&amp;a about how history writes the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anneapplebaum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Anne Applebaum&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>is a staff writer for&nbsp;<em>The Atlantic<\/em> and a Pulitzer-prize winning historian. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and the Agora Institute, where she co-directs Arena, a program on disinformation and 21st century propaganda. In addition to her voluminous writings in publications including&nbsp;<em>The Atlantic<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Washington Post<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The New Yorker<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Foreign Affairs<\/em>, and many others, she is the author of <em>Gulag: A History <\/em>winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction,&nbsp;<em>Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956<\/em>, and <em>Red Famine: Stalin&#8217;s War on Ukraine<\/em>. Applebaum&#8217;s newest book is&nbsp;<em>Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anne Applebaum will be interviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/rest.gmu.edu\/people\/sbarnes3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steven Barnes<\/a>, Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rest.gmu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies<\/a> and Associate Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/historyarthistory.gmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of History and Art History<\/a> at George Mason University.
