V. Vinogradov Russian Language Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow invite you to participate in the preparation of a volume on the study of the Cyrillic manuscript heritage of the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times (c. 1000–1600). This volume will follow three basic issues: the text of the manuscripts, the locations of their production, and the persons who are directly responsible for their creation.

We invite you to write a book chapter related to the study of the content of books: their typology (genre/repertoire; biblical, liturgical, regulatory, theological, preaching, instructive, etc.); features of language and recensions of manuscripts; specifics of the translation traditions; comments on the content; readers’ perceptions of the text; and other aspects related to the textology of Cyrillic books. The volume will focus on the places of production of books (cathedral, monastic, parish, princely, noble locations) as centers of book creation; the “God-blessed Place”: whether a town or village was saved because of the presence of a scriptorium in it; problems of using toponyms in the text and margins/colophons; and the perception and influence on the culture and education of the society of scriptoria. In the third section of the volume, we intend to re-examine the issues of customers of codices, their copyists, buyers and depositors, and their authors’ motivation to order, rewrite, buy and donate books; perceptions and ideas about their mission by enumerators, buyers, investors, and authors; mentality, religiosity, education of scribes, buyers, investors, authors; and social affiliation, level of material well-being, and professional affiliation of enumerators, buyers, depositors, and authors.

Submission procedure

The volume will be published by Peter Lang (in the series “South-East European History”). Original manuscripts should be prepared following the editorial guide of Peter Lang available on its website. Manuscripts must not have been published, submitted for publication or available on the internet elsewhere. Interdisciplinary work is particularly welcome. Please submit your proposal, including the title of your manuscript, an abstract (up to 300 words), and an author’s biography (up to 100 words) to all editors. The abstract should include the research question and purpose, the approach and main ideas, and results. No figures, tables, footnotes, or endnotes should be included in the abstract.
