Studirao je u Be\u010du, gdje je poslije Prvoga svjetskog rata zapo\u010deo novinarsku karijeru. Potom je nekoliko godina \u017eivio u Njema\u010dkoj, najvi\u0161e u Berlinu. Ondje je napisao i objavio prve romane, izme\u0111u ostalih i \u201eHotel Savoy\u201c, u kojima se bavi traumati\u010dnim iskustvima austrougarskih vojnika nakon Svjetskoga rata, posebno onih koje je svr\u0161etak rata zatekao u ruskome zarobljeni\u0161tvu. Nakon dolaska na vlast Hitlerovih nacionalsocijalista, nastanio se u Parizu i vi\u0161e se nije vra\u0107ao u Njema\u010dku. U francuskom izgnanstvu napisao je glavna djela, me\u0111u njima i \u201eRadetzky mar\u0161\u201c (1932.), u kojemu nostalgi\u010dno opisuje propast Austro-Ugarske Monarhije i ra\u0161\u010dlanjuje uzroke njezina raspada. Umro je u pari\u0161koj sirotinjskoj bolnici 1939. godine.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span>Rothovo se knji\u017eevno stvaranje ne mo\u017ee lako svrstati u odre\u0111eni pravac suvremene literature. Najbli\u017ei je, barem u ranim djelima, skupini autora koja se razvila iz ekspresionizma i u nas se obi\u010dno naziva \u201eNovom stvarno\u0161\u0107u\u201c (Neue Sachlichkeit).<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span>O njegovu je stilu veliki njema\u010dki knji\u017eevni kriti\u010dar Marcel Reich-Ranicki napisao sljede\u0107e: &#8220;Roth je bio neobi\u010dan pisac i zato \u0161to je bio kadar pisati mnogo, a istodobno biti savjestan umjetnik. Nikad se nije ogrje\u0161ivao o prirodnost tona, nikad nije bio op\u0161iran, u njegovu stilu nije bilo mjesta koketiranju. <span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\">Ta je proza dosljedna, a ipak elasti\u010dna, vitka, ali ne i mr\u0161ava, mi\u0161i\u0107ava, ali ne i ko\u0161\u010data. Roth je bio grozni\u010dav \u010dovjek, \u010dovjek na rubu. Iz njegova jezika me\u0111utim izvire potpuni mir, \u010dak prosvije\u0107enost.\u201c<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Roman \u201eHotel Savoy\u201c<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">U romanu \u201eHotel Savoy\u201c iz 1924. godine, jednom od svojih prvih knji\u017eevnih ostvarenja, Joseph Roth u prvome licu opisuje sudbinu austrougarskoga vojnika Gabriela Dana, koji se zavr\u0161etkom Prvoga svjetskoga rata vra\u0107a iz ruskoga zarobljeni\u0161tva te na putu prema Be\u010du sti\u017ee u grad \u201ena vratima Europe\u201c, kojemu se ne navodi ime, ali bi prema opisu mogao biti poljski \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, te odsjeda u hotelu Savoy. U golemu hotelu na sedam katova \u017eive svi dru\u0161tveni slojevi; paradoksalno su na donjim katovima smje\u0161teni bogata\u0161i, dok u visini, blizu Boga, \u017eivotare siromasi. Hotel izvana djeluje rasko\u0161no; iznutra se, me\u0111utim, otkriva i materijalna i moralna bijeda tada\u0161njega dru\u0161tva. Bogati industrijalci svake ve\u010deri gledaju gole djevojke u hotelskom baru, siromasima tajanstveni liftboj Ignaz zaklju\u010dava kov\u010dege kad ne mogu platiti sobu, danima se i\u0161\u010dekuje dolazak bogatog Amerikanca Bloomfielda koji treba promijeniti sve. Vlasnika hotela nitko nikad nije vidio. Gabrielu se u hotelu uskoro pridru\u017euje i jedan hrvatski lik, njegov ratni drug Zvonimir Pansin, anarhisti\u010dni revolucionar, koji na kraju romana s mno\u0161tvom drugih povratnika sudjeluje u razaranju hotela te pritom i sam strada, dok Dan odlazi u Ameriku, koja se u romanu nudi kao novi po\u010detak i alternativa Europi.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font  size=\"3\">  <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span lang=\"FR\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: FR;\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span>U godinama nove seobe naroda &#8211;
