WAS TITO\u2019S YUGOSLAVIA NOT TOTALITARIAN?<\/strong> (223\u2013248)<\/p>\n

This paper is a response to an article \u201cWas Tito\u2019s Yugoslavia totalitarian?\u201d published in the journal Communist and Post-Communist Studies 47 (2014). The two authors indicate the inadequate theoretical framework and untenable interpretations made by Flere and Klanj\u0161ek, who provided a distorted picture of former Yugoslav society and the position of an individual in it. Their reduced theory of totalitarianism combined with their simplified interpretations served their aim of proving that the system established by the Yugoslav communists was not totalitarian nor did it strive to become one. Flere and Klanj\u0161ek\u2019s main argument for the absence of totalitarianism is that of a federal state concept of Yugoslavia, which is not in correlation with contemporary understanding of totalitarianism. By deconstructing their arguments, this article argues for a more elaborated and up-to-date conceptual understanding of Tito\u2019s Yugoslavia and its relation to the concept of totalitarianism.<\/p>\n

Tezu slovena\u010dkih raziskovaleca (nau\u010dnika) Rudija Klajn\u0161eka i Sergeja Flere da socijalisti\u010dka Jugoslavija nije bila totalitarna dr\u017eava osporili su dr Josip Mihaljevi\u0107, istra\u017eiva\u010d saradnik Instituta za povijest i Goran Miljan, doktorand na Univerzitetu u Upsali. Kolege Mihaljevi\u0107 i Miljan ukazuju da uzimanje federalisti\u010dkog ure\u0111enja kao krunskog dokaza netotalitarnosti re\u017eima nije metodolo\u0161ki ispravno i da slovena\u010dki istra\u017eiva\u010di zanemaruju \u010dinjenicu da je klju\u010dna komponenta jugoslovenske totalitarnosti bila – nametanje jedne ideologije (komunisti\u010dke) celokupnom dru\u0161tvu i svakom pojedincu.<\/p>\n

The number of Serbs who were murdered by the Croatian Usta\u0161a regime is still contentious, even though there is broad agreement on the figures among expert historians. The issue is blurred by authors who ignore the canon of scientific discovery. Usta\u0161a terror was awful enough, the author argues. Distorted numbers trivialize debate and degrade the victims.<\/p>\n
