New Research in the History of Everyday Life and Memory Studies”

For more than 30 years, historiography has been pursuing various approaches to examine the history of Poland beyond the national paradigm. Particularly with regard to the German occupation during World War II, a national context of experience appears doubtful against the background of highly fragmented realities of life in the occupied territories of the Second Republic. By force, Poland was subjected to a profound territorial and social reorganization, which made reference in various ways to the ethnic and religious diversity of the population. The supposed liberation of German minorities served to legitimize the war of aggression. The administrative structure of the occupied country followed imaginations of ethnic boundaries and biopolitical utopias, which determined the everyday life and chances of survival of millions of people. At the same time, the German occupiers subjected the population to a hierarchy based on racist and utilitarian criteria. In doing so, they created a regime of difference that brought different population groups into competition with one another and gave new momentum to inter-ethnic tensions from the pre-war period. Finally, the mass crimes of the Holocaust only became possible against the background of the terror of occupation.

In view of the fragmentation of experiences between the extremes of (forced) Germanization and extermination, the longevity of the national interpretative framework with regard to the behavior of historical actors under occupation is surprising. Recent research rejects normative categories such as collaboration and resistance and emphasizes the complexity of historical experiences. It also sketches “occupiers” and “occupied” as very heterogeneous groups, which in turn were connected with each other through manifold interactions in their everyday lives that were characterized by asymmetrical power relations.

The history of everyday provides a key to understanding these complex interrelationships, as it focusses social practice on a micro-historical level against the background of the large structures of the occupation. In this way, everyday life under occupation and its concrete practices come into view, individual perspectives “from below” are placed in relation to “the” history. This approach makes the survival strategies of marginalized historical actors visible and takes their experiences seriously.

In Poland and Germany, different research traditions have been established in this field, which should be more closely interchanged. We therefore invite young scholars who conduct research on everyday life in World War II to a two-day conference at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw from 23-24 April 2020. We particularly welcome theory-driven and empirically grounded contributions from ongoing projects. Proposals related to the Soviet or double occupation, extending beyond the temporal caesurae of World War II or focusing memory issues are also welcome.

Proposals for contributions of 20 min should be sent with an abstract (max. 500 words, in English, Polish or German) and a short CV by 23 February 2020 by e-mail to martin.borkowski-saruhan@uni-goettingen.de. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out no later than 28 February 2020. The deadline for submission of the completed paper is 9 April 2020.

The organisers will cover the costs for travel, accommodation and catering for all speakers. Guest are also welcome after prior registration.

— deutsche Version —
