Quelle importance puisqu\u2019il aurait quitt\u00e9 ce monde? Pourtant Diog\u00e8ne fit scandale. Pourquoi \u2013 quel que soit le contexte religieux et id\u00e9ologique, et m\u00eame lorsque la croyance en l\u2019\u00e2me est impr\u00e9cise \u2013 le corps sans vie est-il consid\u00e9r\u00e9, en tous lieux et \u00e0 toutes \u00e9poques, comme important? Comment la persistance de l\u2019\u00eatre se substitue-t-elle au cadavre? Les vivants ont bien plus besoin des morts que l\u2019inverse, et les morts sont \u00e0 l\u2019origine de mondes sociaux.<\/p>\n<p>Mobilisant po\u00e9sie et peinture, architecture et m\u00e9decine, statuaire et g\u00e9ographie, litt\u00e9rature et th\u00e9ologie, ce grand livre d\u00e9limite les mani\u00e8res dont les morts ont fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 le monde moderne, malgr\u00e9 le d\u00e9senchantement suppos\u00e9 de notre \u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Trois questions le structurent. \u00abO\u00f9 sont g\u00e9ographiquement les morts?\u00bb Laqueur d\u00e9crit la naissance, au Moyen \u00c2ge, du lieu de repos dominant des morts \u2013 l\u2019enclos paroissial \u2013 et expose les motifs pour lesquels, aux XVIIIe et XIXe si\u00e8cles, il fut largement supplant\u00e9 par le cimeti\u00e8re moderne. \u00abQui sont les morts?\u00bb explicite les raisons qui ont rendu insupportable l\u2019inhumation anonyme et conduit, depuis le XIXe si\u00e8cle et \u00e0 une \u00e9chelle sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, \u00e0 r\u00e9unir les noms des d\u00e9funts sur de longues listes et des monuments comm\u00e9moratifs. \u00abQue sont les morts?\u00bb \u00e9claire l\u2019\u00e9chec de la cr\u00e9mation : cette technique sophistiqu\u00e9e \u2013 la transformation du corps en mati\u00e8re inorganique \u2013, commenc\u00e9e comme une fantaisie moderniste visant \u00e0 d\u00e9pouiller la mort de son histoire, est venue buter sur l\u2019inacceptable anonymat des cendres du G\u00e9nocide.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019originalit\u00e9 fonci\u00e8re de Laqueur est de r\u00e9v\u00e9ler les mani\u00e8res dont les morts font la civilisation \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle comme au niveau intime, en tous lieux et en tous temps ; leur poids historique, philosophique et anthropologique est immense et presque sans limite ni comparaison.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallimard.fr\/Catalogue\/GALLIMARD\/NRF-Essais\/Le-travail-des-morts\">http:\/\/www.gallimard.fr\/Catalogue\/GALLIMARD\/NRF-Essais\/Le-travail-des-morts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thomas W.
