Sparsamkeit versteht sich in Deutschland von selbst. Private und \u00f6ffentliche Haushalte ebenso wie die Unternehmen sparen in Deutschland in gro\u00dfem Umfang. Die Mehrheit der Menschen im Land stellt das Sparen der privaten Haushalte auch in Zeiten historisch niedriger Zinsen nicht in Frage, ebenso wenig die Spardoktrin der deutschen Finanz- und Au\u00dfenpolitik.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Beobachter au\u00dferhalb Deutschlands hingegen blicken in den letzten Jahren zunehmend kritisch auf die deutsche Sparneigung. Hierbei wird nicht nur die Rolle Deutschlands bei der Durchsetzung der Sparpolitik im Euro-Raum hinterfragt, sondern auch das Sparen in Deutschland selber. Die Ausgabenzur\u00fcckhaltung der privaten und \u00f6ffentlichen Haushalte sowie der Unternehmen tr\u00e4gt zu dem erheblichen Leistungsbilanz\u00fcberschuss des Landes bei, dem ein Gef\u00e4hrdungspotenzial f\u00fcr die Weltwirtschaft und damit auch f\u00fcr die deutsche Wirtschaft zugeschrieben wird.<\/p>\n

Die Ausstellung “Sparen \u2013 Geschichte einer deutschen Tugend” im Deutschen Historischen Museum betrachtet und diskutiert das tradierte Sparverhalten der Deutschen vor dem Hintergrund internationaler Kritik. Sie begibt sich auf die Suche nach der spezifischen Gestalt der deutschen Sparneigung von den Urspr\u00fcngen bis heute. In den Blick genommen werden die Vorformen, sowie die konkreten historischen Erscheinungsformen des Sparens seit der Sp\u00e4taufkl\u00e4rung. Es werden die Entwicklung des Sparens zum Instrument der Staatsfinanzierung sowie der staatlichen Daseinsf\u00fcrsorge und Sozialpolitik beleuchtet. Auch das komplement\u00e4re Verh\u00e4ltnis der Sparpropaganda und Sparwerbung zum Antisemitismus steht im Fokus. Epochen\u00fcbergreifend thematisiert die Ausstellung die Rolle der Sparerziehung f\u00fcr die Genese der deutschen Sparneigung ebenso wie das Verh\u00e4ltnis von Sparen und gesellschaftlichen, wie wirtschaftlichen Krisen.<\/p>\n

Saving goes without saying in Germany. Private households and public organizations, as well as companies, save on a large scale in Germany. Even in times of historically low interest rates, the majority of people in the country hasn\u2019t questioned the point of saving in the private household, nor the doctrine of saving in German financial and foreign policy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Observers outside of Germany, however, have in recent years increasingly taken a critical view on the German propensity to save. They have questioned not only the role of Germany in enforcing austerity in the Eurozone, but also saving within Germany itself. The restrained expenditure of private and public budgets, as well as of companies, contributes considerably to the current-account surplus in the country, which is held to be a potential danger for the world economy and thereby also, by extension, for the German economy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The exhibition “Saving \u2013 History of a German Virtue” at the Deutsches Historisches Museum considers and discusses the saving-oriented behaviour passed down in Germany in the context of growing international criticism. It embarks on a search for the specific character of the German propensity to save, from its origins until today. Its precursors are taken into consideration, as are concrete historical manifestations of saving since the Late Enlightenment. The exhibition will illuminate the development of saving into an instrument of state funding as well as state welfare and social policies. Another focal point is the complementary relationship between pro-saving propaganda and advertising and anti-Semitism. Spanning across various epochs, the exhibition traces the role of education on saving in the genesis of the German propensity \u2013 or urge \u2013 to save, as well as the relationship between saving and social and economic crises.<\/p>\n
